I've just arrived in Yangshuo on the overnight train. It wasn't at all bad actually. Hard sleeper turned out to be fairly soft. The worst part was actually getting the train - I managed to go to the wrong train station and had a mad dash to get across town in time to catch the train. Fortunately Guangzhou's metro is fantastically efficient. It's so modern that not only do mobiles work down there, they actually have phone charging points in the stations!
My day in Guangzhou was pleasant, visiting museums and temples. I had lunch in an amazing vegetarian restaurant. The menu ran to hundreds of items, bizarrely things like beef, chicken and even pig's kidney and sharks fin. I was beginning to have my doubts about its vegetarianess but a note in the menu assured me that everthing was 100% free of any animal product. It seems giving veggie food meaty descriptions is common in china. The other unique thing about the restaurant was that when I left leaving a small tip on the table, the waitress ran after me to give it back. I tried to indicate that it was for her but she refused to take it. Definitely a first!
I'm now in the very friendly Yanghsuo culture house and off to have breakfast.
